FAQs

I’m interested in joining AMBA, but how would joining AMBA be different than joining any other bar association?

It would be different, but in a good way! AMBA is uniquely positioned within the Muslim legal community through its 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(6) organization. We strive not only to serve the interests of our members through professional advancement, networking, and educational programs, but also try to serve the broader community, offering legal resources and giving a voice to the diverse conglomerate of Muslim attorneys.

Further, AMBA differs from many other legal groups in that we seek to build peace by speaking truth to power. For instance, through our advocacy and policy work, we aim to activate the legal community by providing a strong, moral legal voice advocating for the interests of Muslims and all historically marginalized groups in America.

We are also different than many Muslim legal organizations in that we are dedicated to being an intersectional legal space that centers the voices and priorities of Muslim minority communities, whose interests are so often ignored in other organizations.

I’m not a Muslim, can I still join AMBA?

Absolutely! True enough, AMBA’s intent has been, and always will be, to serve as a third-space for Muslim-American lawyers, law students, and aspiring law students, to serve their community through the universal values of love, mercy, compassion, and justice—the same values embodied by the Ahlul-Bayt. But that said, AMBA is also an inclusive space that welcomes and encourages participation by all its members without judgment, and without regard to one’s faith, personal practices, or beliefs. Rather, AMBA members are united in championing the rights of individuals to be treated equally, fairly, and justly under the rule of law.

I’m interested in serving in one or more of AMBA’s committees, but I’m not sure I have time; should I still join?

Yes! Our standing committees often lean on our members and partner organizations to build communities and strengthen our voice. Your participation matters, and anything you can and are willing to do will make a difference!

I like what AMBA is doing, but why doesn’t AMBA also do_____?

Fill in the blank for us! Your ideas are welcomed and if you would like to see AMBA focus on a particular issue of concern, host an event, or provide education on a topic, lets us know. Or better yet, get involved and help be the change you would like to see.
