Statement on the Killings of Muslims in Albequerque

The arrest of a suspect in the recent killings of 4 Muslim men in Albuquerque, New Mexico, 3 of whom were Shi’a Muslim and the 4th who may have been profiled as Shi’a due to his last name (“Hussain”), points convincingly to anti-Shi’a hate as a motive. Anti-Shi’a hate has no place in America or anywhere around the world.

As Muslim lawyers and legal professionals who stand for the civil rights and freedoms of all people, without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, gender, and other identities, we stand strongly against Shiaphobia and urge other groups to do the same.

The American Muslim community has always stood together against sectarian hatred and we are confident will continue to do so after this heinous attack on four innocent civilians. As an organization, the American Muslim Bar Association is deliberately composed of Muslims from different traditions (Shia, Sunni, Sufi, etc) to promote intrafaith understanding and an inclusive vision for the American Muslim community.

We continue to pray for the families who have lost loved ones.
